Counselor's Corner

Oak Knoll has a part-time counselor who works with individual children to help them adjust and be successful within the school environment.  The children are identified and recommended for counseling by the classroom teacher and/ or through the Student Study Team process.  Parents are contacted for permission to work with a specific child.  The Counselor also works with groups of children on social skill development.

Life Skills Program for Parents

School Counselor Nicole Scott is encouraging kids and parents to read Have You Filled a Bucket Today by Carol McCloud. The book is about being kind to people - being a bucket filler, and trying not to be mean - being a bucket dipper. Use the book as a starting point for a conversation about kindness and happiness.

The book kicks off the district's Life Skills Program supported by a Jeanie Ritchie Grant, which provides funding for innovative educators. All four schools in the Menlo Park City School District will promote and teach students the same life skill.

For parents only, Counselor Scott will hold a series of talks on the book Raising Happiness by Christine Carter. The talks will be held at Oak Knoll on Wednesdays in the staff room from 1:30 - 2:30 p.m. and at Encinal on Mondays in Room 6 from 8:30 - 9:30 a.m. Meetings are open to parents from either school.
