Kindergarten Playground Volunteer Guidelines

Playground Volunteer Job (9:45-10:40 AM)

  1. Arrive a few minutes before 9:45 to sign in at the office and pick up a visitor badge. Pick up the key to the patio closet. It is in K2 on a high hook by the doorframe.
  2. 9:45-10:05 AM 1st RECESS: your job is to be an extra set of eyes to make sure kids are following the rules so that everyone can have a safe, fun recess. Rules are attached.
  3. During recess spread out and be in a place where you can keep an eye on the children. Please be vigilant and keep your focus on the children-resist the urge to chat with the other parents on duty. Be prepared to help in the following ways:
    1. Get equipment out of the patio storage closet
    2. Keep an eye out for unsafe play on the play structure (pushing, going up the slide, climbing on the outside of the slide/bridge, etc.)
    3. Keep an eye for unsafe play on the patio/grass (“Tag” can get rough quickly-remind the children that ‘tag’ is a touch only, no pulling clothes or arms; no swinging on gates; no climbing fences or trees, etc.)
    4. No weapons
    5. Keep an eye out for any conflicts and help solve problems if needed
    6. Keep an eye out for wanderers and remind the children of the playground boundaries (No playing over by the lunch tables; no playing in the halls by the restrooms)
    7. Generally the consequences for breaking a rule: 1st offense warrants a reminder and 2nd offense warrants sitting in a safe spot for 2-3 minutes. There will always be teachers on duty: feel free to defer to them for discipline.
  4. 10:05-10:20 AM SNACK: Spread out and be available to help students open containers as needed. Remind the children that they are expected to stay seated during the entire snack unless throwing away trash or using the restroom. Remind children to clean up their trash. Please help with our allergy tables (both are labeled) and redirect children if they need it.
  5. 10:20-10:40 AM 2nd RECESS: your job is the same as the first recess. When the bell rings at 10:40, children are to help clean up the toys and bring them to the closet. Children are not allowed in the closet. You will help them put the toys inside the closet and then check the yard for any missed equipment.
  6. Return the key to K2 and sign out in the office.

Please feel free to ask a teacher on duty if you have any questions.
