Anyone can participate in our Summer Reading Program, but it is ideally geared towards children who can
read 2nd-4th grade material. Also, many of the books lend themselves well to being read
aloud with multiple ages of kids. Our reading specialist looks for awesome newly
published books from the last year or two - paying particular attention
to books that start a series so kids have some good choices when
they're done with our suggestions. Kids read the books, add their name
to the list inside the front cover along with their rating of the book, and then passes the book along to another student at Oak Knoll who wants to read it.
Whoever has the book when school starts again in August brings it back to our Reading Specialist when
they are finished. This year, we will try to have duplicate copies of
some titles so that friends can be reading the same book together and
so that everyone gets a chance at some of the more popular ones.
At the heart of this program, it's kids doing what their parents do: Reading a great book
someone recommended and then passing it on to a friend to read because
they enjoyed it so much. We'll have some fresh titles to
share with kids for their summer reading, so be sure to check back this June. There is also a blog that
has the whole list of books being sent home in case you just can't
wait your turn and want to find it at Kepler's or the library.
